Chapter 16 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Research Methods in the Social Sciences, 2026, pp 114-120 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This entry provides an international perspective on the variety of methods that homelessness research has taken on different geographical contexts by focusing on path-breaking studies in the US and the UK and including recent efforts to explain its rise across other parts of Europe and the Global South. It offers a brief review of, first, the history of ethnographic methods on the experiences of the homeless in the streets and shelters; second, quantitative methods used to document the magnitude and the composition of the homeless population; and, third, recent mixed methods research into homeless pathways. The review highlights contemporary challenges for the evolution of these three methodological strands and implications for the design of social policies.
