Arts-based research

Margrit Schreier and Nicole Weydmann

Chapter 2 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Research Methods in the Social Sciences, 2026, pp 10-17 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Arts-based research (ABR) combines arts and social science research methods in order to answer a research question. Key characteristics include acknowledging the value of and generating non-discursive knowledge, which is typically preliminary, polyvalent, contextual, and subjective. This is presented in such a way that it resonates with the recipients and thereby points beyond the individual. It is often informed by a critical impetus, requires a reflexive attitude from the researcher, and is aimed at dissemination to a broader audience. Following a discussion of these defining characteristics, we describe the origins of ABR, its relationship to qualitative research, and its adoption in different social science disciplines. We give an overview of subgenres, with a focus on a selected few such as autoethnography. Quality criteria for evaluating ABR are still controversial. We especially stress the importance of ethics, resonance, and transparency before concluding with an outlook on future developments.
