Consumer cash-flow management and budgeting behavior

Rameshkumar Subramanian and Arjun Tp

Chapter 5 in A Research Agenda for Consumer Financial Behavior, 2023, pp 59-72 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter reviews the literature on consumer cash-flow management and budgeting behavior to comprehend how these concepts are conceptualized and operationalized. This chapter also discusses the antecedents and outcomes of consumer cash-flow management and budgeting behavior. It is found that both consumer cash-flow management and budgeting behavior are the least explored ones in the field of personal finance. Comparison between consumer cash-flow management and budgeting behavior clearly indicates that no study has made an attempt to conceptualize budgeting behavior. Further, there is no comprehensive measure of consumer budgeting behavior. The results demonstrate the need for more research on consumer cash-flow management and budgeting behavior to develop a commonly accepted definition and operationalization procedure.
