Migration, ethnic diversity, and partnerships

Nadja Milewski

Chapter Chapter 18 in Research Handbook on Partnering across the Life Course, 2025, pp 214-227 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Europe has witnessed an increase in population heterogeneity in recent decades due to ongoing immigration and the diversification of migrant and ethnic minority groups. This chapter summarizes different aspects of partnerships among immigrants to European destination countries. The first section takes the second demographic transition theory, which emphasizes attitudinal change, union formation postponement, and the decline of traditional marriage as its point of departure. Here, we examine the timing and types of union formation and their interrelations with other life domains. Drawing on theories regarding mate selection and migrant assimilation, the second section focuses on exogamy, i.e., unions between migrants and non-migrants or individuals from different ethnic backgrounds, as a marker of social boundaries. Collectively, the findings demonstrate that ethnic diversity contributes to partnership diversity by producing hybrid partnership patterns.
