LGBTQ+ partnerships

Chapter Chapter 8 in Research Handbook on Partnering across the Life Course, 2025, pp 89-101 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Diversity in relationship patterns creates both opportunities and potential challenges for all partners involved. In our society, sexual and gender diversity has become more visible and accepted by many, although cis- and heteronormative societal norms prevail. Research shows that protective factors of relationship quality and duration are similar in intimate relationships of sexual and gender minorities. Advantages have been described: less traditional gender roles, more equality between partners and better conflict management skills. However, romantic relationships that defy traditional norms are also challenged due to lack of social support and the potential negative impact of minority stressors on relationship dynamics and relationship satisfaction. Furthermore, transgender and gender diverse people initiating a social and/or medical transition can face specific obstacles and needs in the context of a partnership, also called co-transition.
