Views and Reproductions

Robert Mirko Stutz and Evelyne Feller

Chapter 35 in The Hague Agreement on International Design Registrations, 2026, pp 351-399 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter examines Rule 9 of the Common Regulations and Sections 401 to 405 of the Administrative Instructions governing the reproductions of an industrial design under the Hague System. While the Geneva Act itself contains no detailed provisions, these texts set out the form, quality, number and dimensions of the reproductions and the acceptable types of views – including line drawings, photographs, computer-rendered images, exploded, explanatory and moving images – together with disclaimers expressed through dotted or broken lines, blurring or written explanations. The chapter addresses specified views, legends, and the limited grounds on which a Contracting Party may refuse the effects of a registration for insufficient disclosure. It then turns to the strategic guidance offered in the Hague User Guide and the Guidance on Preparing and Providing Reproductions, illustrating selection of representative views, treatment of colour, hatching, transparent materials, partial designs and changing states with concrete filing examples.
