Valuing companion animals
Maria Veronica Saladino
Chapter 106 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 405-407 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The valuation of companion animals is a contentious issue. Because companion animals in almost all jurisdictions are considered chattels, their valuation generally is equal to their market value or the price for which they were purchased. Some jurisdictions, however, are increasingly recognizing that companion animals provide their owners with much more than just economic benefits. In those jurisdictions, valuing companion animals includes emotional factors such as the value of the animal's companionship and the emotional injury caused to the owner due to their loss.
