Dog and cat meat trade
Peter J. Li
Chapter 32 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 124-127 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Dogs are the quintessential companion animals in the world. However, dogs are also slaughtered for food on different continents, particularly in Southeast and East Asia. Lawlessness is the defining word that describes the trade in Asia. Contrary to the claim by traders, dog meat is not part of the mainstream food culture of China, Korea, and Vietnam, for example. The uncertain legal status of dogs and dog meat explains the continuous existence of the trade and the general failure of law enforcement. Korea's recent ban of its dog meat trade offers a roadmap for similar legislative breakthroughs in other countries.
