Farmed animal welfare laws in the EU

Paul Tweddell

Chapter 39 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 151-154 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: For almost 50 years, the European Union [EU] has developed legislation on farm animal welfare and is recognised as a leader in welfare standards. The EU recognises animal sentience, meaning due regard must be given to animal welfare when preparing and implementing policies. EU legislation on the welfare of farm animals covers all vertebrate species (with specific provisions for poultry, calves, and pigs), transport, slaughter, and medicine. Despite EU legislation being one of the most advanced in the world, shortfalls exist, particularly with enforcement by Member States [MS]. Proposals have been made to improve farm animal welfare, including as part of the EU's Farm to Fork strategy [F2F] for more sustainable agriculture.
