Humane education

Meena Alagappan and Stephanie Itle-Clark

Chapter 49 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 187-189 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Humane education, a form of inclusive social justice, aims to foster empathy, compassion, and ethical decision-making in individuals as a means of nurturing a more compassionate and sustainable society. Fostering empathy and critical thinking in students equips them with the knowledge and skills needed to tackle real-world challenges such as environmental degradation, animal welfare issues, and social injustices. There are various humane education laws and programmes internationally; however, there is no common framework guiding schools, organizations, and learning expectations. The role of educators and the integration of humane education differ depending on locale and curricula. If the field moves toward a unified model of instruction, evaluations and studies could position humane education to more readily become part of the standard curriculum. Whether formally or informally incorporated into learning, humane education has the potential to shape a generation of conscientious global citizens who work to support prosocial systems.
