Overview of Brazilian animal law
Carlos Frederico Ramos de Jesus
Chapter 72 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 272-275 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The relevance of animal law in Brazil grew with the adoption of the 1988 Constitution, which prohibited cruelty against animals. Although there were protective statutes before the Constitution, the inclusion of this protection in Brazil´s highest law enabled the Supreme Court to rule on important cases related to animal protection. The constitutional status of animal protection has paved a path for positive changes concerning domestic animals but has done little for the billions of animals slaughtered each year in Brazil for food.
