Overview of UK animal law
Edie Bowles
Chapter 84 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 324-327 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The UK is a global leader in its development of animal protection law. The UK's animal protection laws include variations in legislation across the four countries that make up the UK, highlighting the complex interplay across this legal landscape. One of the most renowned animal laws borne out of EU law provides for full regard to the welfare of animals, as sentient beings, when developing policy in areas including agriculture, transport and research. Post-Brexit, the UK introduced the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act 2022 to ensure key legislation remained which provides for the formation of an Animal Sentience Committee. While domestic animals are afforded the most protections under UK animal law, the UK also provides certain protections for farmed animals, wild animals (including those held captive), and animals used in experimentation.
