Rights of nature

Rajesh K. Reddy

Chapter 99 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law, 2025, pp 378-380 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Rights of nature frameworks, which seek to equip nature with rights of its own, are relatively new internationally and are helping to engender more eco-centric views on environmental stewardship. Their ability to protect the natural environment—whether as a collective whole or its individual parts—holds the promise of securing the legal rights of animals, who have already been recognized as legal persons under certain rights of nature paradigms.
