The Women Peace and Security Resolutions: UNSCR 1325 to 2493

Laura McLeod

Chapter 35 in Handbook on Gender in World Politics, 2026, pp 231-237 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The chapter surveys the ten United Nations Women, Peace and Security (WPS) resolutions, considered a foundational gender equality architecture prompting the mainstreaming of gender in conflict-prevention, peacekeeping and peacebuilding processes, as well as peace and security participation and leadership. The chapter highlights key scholarly debates for judging how successful the WPS agenda has been, exploring (1) what the WPS agenda is, (2) who implements the WPS agenda and (3) who has, and where is, knowledge about WPS.
