Abstract: Microcredit and microfinance schemes are high-profile poverty interventions by international development institutions, microfinance institutions, as well as non-governmental organizations. They have a prominent place in the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda. Yet, they are contested because of their adverse social, economic and political implications.
