Abstract:
There is an emerging trend of studies on the synthesis and trade-offs between Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, the attention on the interactions between different dimensions of the same SDG or within an SDG indicator is relatively insufficient. This chapter uses the example of SDG Indicator 14.7.1 to explore the interactions between the economic and environmental dimensions of using marine resources for sustainable development. It is observed that while this indicator partially meets the ‘Specific-Measurable-Achievable-Realistic-Time bounded’ (SMART) standard, the interactions between the economic and the environmental dimensions of SDG Indicator 14.7.1 lead to ambiguity in defining, understanding, and using this indicator. Several practical implications are generated based on the most recent data for SDG Indicator 14.7.1 of selected countries. For example, a better understanding of the country context would be helpful in reducing the ambiguity caused by the interactions between the economic and environmental dimensions of SDG Indicator 14.7.1.
