Chapter 5 in Understanding Fiscal Decentralization, 2025, pp 114-125 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In view of the decades-long progress of the theory of fiscal decentralization and the policy lessons emerging from its increasing practice, this section highlights several issues concerning the future of fiscal decentralization and its institutional design. Specifically, issues such as new regionalism, glocalization and digitalization are likely to compel policymakers and lawmakers to reform institutions to foster economic development in the face of a rapidly evolving geopolitical and economic environment.
