Chapter 2 in Rethinking Spatial Inequality, 2025, pp 27-59 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter provides a conceptual anchor for the book and an organizing structure for understanding spatial inequality. We conceptualize spatial inequality in a three-pronged manner as: a general social science concept; an umbrella area of scholarly inquiry spanning wide-ranging studies that also possess certain common features; and a distinct lens on inequality that sheds new light on substantive domains of research. We provide an organizing template for linking different bodies of work often siloed by substantive area, disciplinary tradition, and scale of focus. We address common issues including: domains of well-being studied; geographies of space, place, and spatial scales that inform research; how the concept of spatial inequality is deployed to address relationships of social science interest; and the significance of the subnational scale. We identify common features that underscore a more inclusive, cohesive “enhanced approach” to spatial inequality that can be used to inform existing research.
