Abstract: This chapter examines the interplay among illiberalism, populism, and sovereignty, with particular attention to the function of sovereignism within the constitutional counter-narrative advanced by proponents of illiberal and populist movements. The analysis focuses on how the concept of sovereignty is reinterpreted and deployed within this illiberal-populist discourse. The first section outlines the contested meanings of populism and illiberalism, unpacking their conceptual ambiguity. The second part addresses their impact on the understanding of sovereignty, using the traditional (albeit increasingly outdated) distinction between internal and external sovereignty.
