Abstract: This chapter provides an in-depth critique of sovereignism, a European ideology that advocates for nation-states to reassert their sovereignty in response to external influences. The author traces the historical evolution of both sovereignty and democracy, emphasizing the complex and often antagonistic relationship between the two. Sovereignism is analyzed as a contemporary reaction to globalization and the growing power of non-political supranational actors, particularly financial and technological entities.
