Abstract: This chapter explores the complex and often contradictory relationship between anarchism and sovereignty. This chapter emphasizes that sovereignty—traditionally viewed as the antithesis of anarchy—can be reimagined through Indigenous and non-western perspectives. Martel provides a critique of the dominant conception of sovereignty as “archism,” a hierarchical and oppressive system exemplified by thinkers like Carl Schmitt, who defines sovereignty through the “state of exception” and its association with violence.
