Abstract: This chapter tackles the concept of sovereignty and its evolution, beginning with its origins in the late Middle Ages and early modern period, with particular attention to the theories of Jean Bodin and Thomas Hobbes. It traces the process of its inclusion in constitutions of the last two and half centuries and concludes that sovereignty is one of the foundational myths of the modern state.
