Abstract: This chapter deals with various conceptions of sovereignty within Islamic thought, contrasting the idea of divine sovereignty with that of popular sovereignty. This contrast bears on the tension between Islamic tradition and modernity, particularly the influence of the latter on models of governance in Muslim-majority states.
