From qualitative visual analysis to social science films

Chapter 21 in Handbook of Interpretive Research Methods in the Social Sciences, 2025, pp 324-343 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Recent years have witnessed a surge in interest among interpretive scholars in researching visual culture. This emerging field covers an array of topics, from theoretical underpinnings of the visual to methods of collecting and analyzing visual data and exploring the implications of visual material for various disciplines. While some studies have delved into the use of visual language techniques in the social sciences, particularly in filmmaking, relatively fewer have examined the broader applicability of such techniques. Given the expanding role of visual culture in societal transformations, questions emerge about the adequacy of writing- or speech-based interpretive social research and science communication in addressing challenges posed by an increasingly visual mode of social representation. While we wish to present visual methods in this scope, we pursue an additional objective in this chapter: to bridge the gap between a nuanced German-speaking discourse and a broader international discourse in this field.
