Understanding interpretive research in communication
Jillian A. Tullis
Chapter 9 in Handbook of Interpretive Research Methods in the Social Sciences, 2025, pp 138-152 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on interpretive methods in the discipline of communication. The philosophical foundations of these approaches are outlined, followed by a description of the development of interpretive approaches in communication. Some general guidance about how to do interpretive research, from data collection to analysis, is presented. Exemplars and instructional and reference texts, primarily from communication, are woven throughout. I also reflect on my own personal path toward interpretation. The chapter concludes by looking towards the future and calls on scholars to take seriously the calls to decolonize methods, as a means to not only move the discipline forward but to do the most good for the people whose communication they seek to understand.
