An introduction to Rethinking Sport and Society

Elizabeth C.J. Pike ()

Chapter 1 in Rethinking Sport and Society, 2025, pp 1-10 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This rethinking of sport and society is grounded in the academic sub-discipline of the sociology of sport and informed by interviews with global thought leaders from a range of countries, all continents, and a variety of professional backgrounds, ensuring the rethinking was informed by a diversity of cultural viewpoints and life experiences. The book is written against the backdrop of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the Covid-19 pandemic, several significant geopolitical events, and in the context of the technological advances of what has been called the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This chapter overviews the methodology of co-creation that was used to develop the book and the focus of each of the chapters that follow.
