Rethinking sport and society: concluding (re)thoughts
Elizabeth C.J. Pike ()
Chapter 14 in Rethinking Sport and Society, 2025, pp 147-151 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This book has presented a rethinking of sport informed by the worldviews of global thought leaders from a variety of countries and cultures. Their priority issues include ways to make sport more accessible to more people, redistributing power between civil society and state institutions, the contributions that sport might make to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the relevance of sport in the digital age and for emerging economies, and the importance of hearing from younger generations and those outside of sport. The book was set against the backdrop of a number of geopolitical issues, with interviewees suggesting ways that sport might contribute to navigating these and supporting mutual understanding. A recurrent theme throughout the book was the historical dominance of institutions and viewpoints from the Global North, and the need to draw on the perspective and experiences of those in the Global South and a wider variety of stakeholders.
