Female leadership in aviation

Ferhan K. Sengur

Chapter 10 in Research Handbook on Air Transport Leadership and Governance, 2025, pp 138-158 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Gender equality, a fundamental human right, provides a firm foundation for a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world. More equitable gender distribution is also necessary for a harmonious society with full human potential and long-term development. Furthermore, it has been proven that empowering women enhances societal and national productivity and economic growth. While women's presence in the worldwide aviation business has historically been low, their presence has always been spectacular, and there is a rising trend. Furthermore, in recent decades, industry policymakers have collaborated to produce high-level policies, and these efforts have enhanced women aviators’ contribution to aviation and sustainable development. This chapter examines the status of women in aviation and focuses on female leadership in aviation. For this purpose, women and women leadership in the business world and aviation are discussed, and the current aviation situation is examined. After revealing the global efforts on women, high-level international efforts to develop the status of women in aviation are examined with examples. Although there have been some deliberate efforts in recent years, the number of women employees and leaders needs to be supported. In the last part, conclusions and recommendations are given with prospects to actively support women leaders in aviation.
