Leading the way to decarbonise the aviation sector: the UK's jet zero council

Michelle Carter

Chapter 12 in Research Handbook on Air Transport Leadership and Governance, 2025, pp 178-197 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The UK Government established the world's first Jet Zero Council (JZC) in 2020, a partnership between industry, government, and academia to bring together ministers and chief executive officer-level stakeholders, with the aim of delivering at least 10 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the UK fuel mix by 2030 and a zero-emission transatlantic flight within a generation. The JZC also aims to drive the ambitious delivery of new technologies and innovative ways to cut aviation emissions. It also has a suite of delivery groups to drive forward the Council's ambitions. Members of the JZC and associated groups are fully committed to the ambition and, between July 2020 and July 2023, have made 296 new advancements in SAF and zero-emission flight. This is complemented by over £882 million in public investment and over 18 policy developments. Collaboration, leadership, and commitment are the key principles to delivering change at pace towards Jet Zero.
