Chinese and other perspectives on football

.

Chapter 1 in The Footballization of China, 2023, pp 1-30 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The power of football is the theme of this book. Through discussing and comparing features of football in Europe and China in chapter 1 we approach the main issue: Will China be able to fulfill the wish of President Xi by winning the World Cup in 2050? And which should be the most effective strategy for China in order to achieve this goal? Should China decide to "Go it Alone" or to "Copy Europe"? Or maybe something in between? Football is a dynamic, global industry. It inspires passion and people, involves merchandise and money, supports ideology and identity, fosters corruption and community, enhances profile and professionalism and generates sponsorship and symbolism. How is football organized in China? How can the government guidelines and development plans to improve the quality of Chinese football become successful?
