Choosing to grow during an economic downturn: the story of TCC Multi-Family Interiors

Lee Grumbles and Travis Hardwick

Chapter 10 in Cases on Corporate Entrepreneurship in North America, 2025, pp 99-107 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: TCC, a flooring and subcontracting company to multifamily home builders, began in 1996. Travis Hardwick, a recent graduate of Baylor University's School of Law, joined the company as a part-time accounting assistant. Over the next 15 years, the company experienced significant growth, capturing a multitude of projects ranging from senior-living homes in Houston, Texas, to apartment complexes in San Jose, California, and urban infills in Atlanta, Georgia. The company's long-term strategy was to expand its offerings and become a nationwide provider to multifamily home builders. However, it lacked the required state licenses to grow the TCC footprint. Therefore, it decided to grow by acquisition. The major question for the company in 2023 was which company it should acquire and how much it should pay for the acquisition.
