Tagging prices: the proliferation of price tag technologies

Abstract: Chapter 2 reviews the spread and evolution of price display technologies, notably mobile and adjustable price tags for store shelves. It shows how the invention of price tags helped spread prices onto the shelves as well as introduce a subtle equilibrium between fixed, public prices for every consumer and removable prices for the grocers. It reviews how this new technology was refined, through the introduction of “swing tags”, which built a better vertical association between the goods and the underlying prices, and “price tag moldings” that afforded improved lateral placement of prices. By disclosing prices, tags introduced a profound cultural and economic change: they empowered consumers, weakened service, and favored powerful actors like chains and supermarkets.
