Chapter 1 in Economic Development, Economic Growth and Income Distribution, 2025, pp 2-23 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter provides a background for the rest of the book. The purpose of the book is to examine the main aspects of the economic development of currently low- and middle-income countries, with special emphasis on Latin America, since the 1950s from the structuralist perspective. Accordingly, this chapter discusses the economic development experience of these countries in the context of overall global economic development. It explains what we mean by the structuralist approach or approaches. Since the book honors the memory of Jaime Ros, who worked extensively on the issues using the approaches examined in this book, it then comments on his main contributions. Finally, it provides an overview of the chapters making up the book with three parts: dealing first with general global and theoretical issues, then with Latin America, and finally with Mexico in particular.
