Positioning the paper for publication
Girish Prayag
Chapter 8 in How to Get Published in the Best Tourism Journals, 2024, pp 108-121 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Positioning a paper is both an art and a science, often requiring adherence to publisher, journal, editor and reviewer expectations. While there is no standard framework that can be readily applied to position a paper for tourism and hospitality journals, there are ways to ensure that a paper transcends the desk rejection and goes under review. This chapter uses storytelling as a communication method to outline how to position a paper for a journal. The four processes of storytelling, including dramatization, emotionalization, personalization and fictionalization, are discussed in relation to the main sections of a manuscript (introduction, literature review, method, findings/results and discussion/implications). From these, a modified AC/DC grid is offered to better shape the contribution of a study to have both academic and industry impact. The chapter concludes with some reflections of publishing as a whole and the importance of positioning the paper for multiple audiences.
