Teaching historical and current events with GIS

Joseph Kerski

Chapter 10 in Teaching Spatial Thinking with Geographic Information Systems, 2026, pp 190-208 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Every day, something happens somewhere. Maps help people understand where an event is occurring and help people learn and understand the scale and background of that event and its location. Studying historical and current events through the framework of spatial thinking is the focus of this chapter with attention on modeling how instructors can teach these events using GIS. Rigorous connections will be made to other themes in this book—population, migration, natural hazards, weather, physical and cultural regions, behavior, equity, environmental justice, and the integration of field work. Through interactive maps, 3D globes, imagery, spatial data including real-time feeds, and visualizations, events past and present will be analyzed through powerful, easy-to-implement lessons at multiple scales from local to global events, including Napoleon's Russia campaign, the Silk Road, the historical development of cities, land use change in Madagascar, the Dust Bowl, teaching the “GeoNews”, and the urban-wildlife interface in cities.
