Abstract:
Natural resources—water, soil, forests, energy sources, plants, animals, and agriculture—occur in specific patterns across the world, change over time, and can be better understood through spatial thinking. Natural resources will be examined at scales from local to regional to global and will be mapped and studied through GIS. The connections between natural resources and other themes in this book, including cultural and physical regions, economics, population, behavior, and equity, will be explored. Natural resources will be studied through interactive maps, 3D globes, imagery, tables, and visualizations through GIS. Teaching core content about our world's natural resources and how humans extract and protect them will be realized through powerful but easy-to-implement lessons at multiple scales and across multiple themes. These lessons include examining global forest canopy, the world's power plants, livestock and agriculture, climbing mountain peaks, and even a local study of soil chemistry in a single field.
