Frugal innovation and sustainability, exploring the empirical relevance of a new taxonomy: fully versus weakly sustainable frugal innovation

Chapter 5 in The Economics of Frugal Innovation, 2023, pp 72-88 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In chapter 5 the core of our developments is the connection between frugal innovation (FI) and sustainable development. We contribute to the literature dealing with this topic in three ways. First, we show how FI can generate more sustainable development while FI is not inherently sustainable. Second, we draw conclusions regarding a possible taxonomy of FI which is based on two opposing categories: FI having no marked sustainable effects vs. fully sustainable FI. Finally, we present an empirical analysis of sample studies published in different academic journals to discover the scale and the scope of these two forms of FI.
