Contemporary global governance: institutions, complexes and approaches

Axel Marx, Jacint Jordana, Marie Vandendriessche and Jan Wouters

Chapter 1 in Institutions of Global Governance, 2025, pp 1-20 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The concept of global governance has evolved significantly since the post-Cold War era, with international cooperation expanding into various institutional forms, including intergovernmental organisations, transnational regulatory networks, and private governance initiatives. This introduction explores the historical trajectory of global governance, its institutional complexities, and contemporary challenges. While the 1990s marked a golden age of international collaboration, recent geopolitical tensions, economic disruptions, and nationalist policies have weakened global governance structures. Declining commitments to multilateral frameworks signal a shift towards fragmentation, stagnation, or transformation. This book aims to map global governance's institutional landscape, analyse its current challenges – such as legitimacy crises, resource constraints, and structural inefficiencies – and explore potential future scenarios. By examining formal and informal governance mechanisms, the role of private actors, and evolving policy frameworks, the book provides insights into how global governance can adapt to a shifting international order.
