Resistance

Chapter 51 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Innovation Management, 2025, pp 196-199 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The entry presents a critical approach to innovation resistance (sometimes referred to as barriers to innovation) as conceived within the pro-innovation literature. It describes innovation resistance as manifesting when innovation processes clash with ‘other’ processes, for example a process striving towards less hazardous chemicals in lakes. Viewing innovation resistance in this light gives the analytical benefits of refraining from a priori ascribing higher value to either of these processes. An empirical case illustrates the interplay of resistance and accommodation between two processes and exemplifies how resistance is crucial in shaping them. It highlights that resistance can be a way to protect the ‘other’ from an undesired innovation or a way to shape the innovation process to fit its intended context better. Furthermore, it emphasises that resistance is tied to structures of power and the struggles and negotiations between actors striving towards different sociotechnical futures.
