 Institutional movements. Chapter 4 in Institutional Theory and Organizational Change, 2023, pp 57-73 from Edward Elgar Publishing Abstract: The purpose of this chapter is to show that the products and actors in the institutional environment do not exist in an intellectual vacuum. This applies in particular to products that attain widespread diffusion. One reason that they attain such widespread distribution is that they are linked to ideas, knowledge and ideologies that, during a particular time period, are expressed by many actors in many contexts. They also find support in institutional movements. Such movements, however, should not be confused with movements where people take to the streets in a collective march, or form human barricades. Rather, it is a question of indirect movements where people align themselves with a particular thinking through encountering many institutional environment products with similar content wherever they are in the world, and by encountering many actors in the environment who offer services of a similar nature. The most important institutional movement in the institutional environment of organizations today is marketization, but there are also complementary sub movements such as organization, company-ization, managementization, and expertization.
