Unethical behavior in tournaments

Francesco Fallucchi

Chapter 13 in Research Handbook on Unethical Behavior, 2026, pp 199-209 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the negative aspects of competition in tournaments and contests, highlighting how the pressure to succeed can lead to unethical behavior. By reviewing a broad range of theoretical frameworks and empirical studies, we survey the literature that identifies the factors that contribute to such behavior and the mechanisms through which it occurs. The competitive nature, high stakes, and significant rewards in these settings often drive participants to unethical actions, such as cheating and sabotage. The chapter synthesizes findings from various fields, including behavioral economics, psychology, and organizational behavior, to comprehensively understand why and how unethical behavior manifests in competitive environments. Key themes discussed include the role of incentives, peer behavior, and organizational culture. Additionally, the chapter differentiates between strategic and non-strategic sabotage and examines gender differences in unethical conduct. It concludes by proposing strategies to mitigate these behaviors and suggesting directions for future research.
