Unveiling the gender dynamics of dishonest behavior in economics: a review of experimental approaches

Valeria Maggian and Natalia Montinari

Chapter 4 in Research Handbook on Unethical Behavior, 2026, pp 45-63 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter examines the complex interplay between gender and dishonest behavior within the field of behavioral and experimental economics. Through a comprehensive literature review, we analyze 37 experimental studies to uncover gender-specific tendencies in dishonesty, focusing on both individual and group decision-making contexts. Our findings reveal that men are generally more prone to dishonest behavior, yet this propensity is significantly influenced by situational factors, such as risk perception and social norms. The review highlights that women, often motivated by ethical considerations and social relationships, exhibit lower levels of dishonesty. Furthermore, we discuss the broader implications of these gender differences for economic modeling and policymaking, suggesting that tailored interventions could enhance the effectiveness of strategies aimed at promoting honesty in various sectors. Ultimately, this chapter contributes to a better understanding of how gender shapes dishonest behavior and its implications for economic theory and practice.
