Chapter 10 in How to Conduct and Publish High-Quality Research in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, 2025, pp 116-131 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
For students and researchers embarking on Experience Sampling Method (ESM) for the first time, this methodology can appear daunting. This chapter aims to facilitate the journey of conducting an ESM study by introducing the concept of ESM and providing a detailed step-by-step guide. It covers a) designing an ESM study, b) collecting ESM data, and c) analyzing ESM data and reporting results. Within the chapter, we discuss not only the strengths and weaknesses of various ESM designs but also offer practical tips to address common reviewer comments on ESM research. Furthermore, we direct readers to published ESM studies and related informational resources for further examples and guidance in ESM research.
