Abstract:
The demand for longitudinal research—designs that employ multiple waves of data collection spanned over time—is increasing in social sciences. Compared to cross-sectional designs, longitudinal methods allow more appropriate testing of dynamic theories. In this chapter, we first introduce longitudinal designs and longitudinal analysis. Then, we discuss key criteria to consider in common longitudinal design types. Lastly, we conclude our chapter with practical recommendations for researchers who consider adopting longitudinal designs for their research. Although we refrain from giving absolute answers, we believe that potential answers are more readily apparent when we understand what longitudinal research is, what kinds of questions longitudinal methods can and cannot answer, and how longitudinal designs might be employed to answer questions about organizational phenomena. Considering these factors leads us to identify the need for theories that specify the nature of change over time.
