Corporate trust and trustworthiness
Michael Hadani
Chapter 21 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Business and Government, 2026, pp 116-120 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This brief entry explores the theoretical foundations and key dynamics of trust and trustworthiness as it applies to organizations and organizational life. It highlights both the transactional and relational aspects of trust, its cognitive and affective foundations and the fact that trust can be applied at a micro, a meso and a macro level of analysis. Trust is assessed through three dimensions – ability (or competence), benevolence and integrity – and these can be applied at different levels of analysis. The entry also highlights the antecedents and potential outcomes of trust, specifically, performance, experiences and risk, reflecting both perceptual and objective criteria. Trust not only impacts strategic outcomes at the firm level but also impacts intra firm relational outcomes. Overall, the entry indicates the importance of exploring trust and trustworthiness and the need for continued research on this important construct.
