Chapter 23 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Business and Government, 2026, pp 126-130 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Employee ownership has long garnered research, practitioner, and policy interest around the world. It comes in many different forms, including employee stock purchase plans, worker cooperatives, employee ownership trusts, and employee stock ownership plans. This entry provides a brief overview of the concept, highlighting its defining characteristics, different dimensions, and common forms. It also provides a synopsis of three prominent research conversations on employee ownership to highlight promising directions for future research: the impacts of employee ownership, participation in employee-owned firms, and the diffusion of different forms of employee ownership around the world.
