Global industry associations

Karsten Ronit

Chapter 28 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Business and Government, 2026, pp 156-162 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Global industry associations thrive in many sectors of the economy, spanning traditional manufacturing industries as well as novel service industries. They lift important tasks not already managed by national member associations or individual member firms, and they specialize in areas not taken care of by general business associations or various alliances in the business community. The industry associations display considerable variation. Some are based on solid traditions, while others are of quite recent origin, sending ever new impulses into global politics. There is a bias toward Europe and North America, but depending on the concrete industry, they draw members from several continents and they have a diversity of tasks in relation to markets and politics. They seek to influence regulation at the global level, but they also provide services to their members to increase their market performance, and they balance these tasks differently.
