Business and right-wing populism1

Daniel Kinderman

Chapter 5 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Business and Government, 2026, pp 23-30 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: With Donald Trump's return to the American presidency with a Republican trifecta, right-wing populism is a very powerful force in world politics. This entry provides a selective overview of key elements of right-wing populism and their implications for business. More specifically, it covers business responses to right-wing populism, the relationship between business power, right-wing populism, and democracy, and some suggestions for future research. It discusses what populism, nativism and racism, ethno-nationalism and nationalism, authoritarianism, personalism, and sovereigntism imply for business. Populist governments can entangle business to consolidate power and damage or destroy democracy. Under what circumstances does business support or oppose right-wing populists and autocrats? Can business exert power and influence against right-wing populists when their objectives clash? These questions are discussed with reference to academic literature and to short empirical vignettes of business responses to the populist right in Germany, Hungary, India, the United States and Switzerland.
