Introduction
James Midgley
A chapter in Social Protection and Development, 2026, pp 1-11 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The Introduction provides a background to the book, noting that social protection has expanded rapidly in the Global South in recent years and that it is now usually associated with development. However, social protection's role in development is primarily legitimized on welfare and humanitarian grounds and little attention has been paid to its economic contribution. The book provides a coherent argument in support of the claim that social protection contributes positively to development by promoting growth, improving welfare, and fostering equity. It also introduces the book's other chapters.
