Introduction to Rethinking the Academic Experience
Malcolm Tight
Chapter 1 in Rethinking the Academic Experience, 2025, pp 1-3 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This book is about rethinking the academic experience, broadly conceived. While the vast majority of research and writing on the academy focuses in detail on particular ‘stakeholders’ and specific topics, this book deliberately takes and presents a more general perspective. The academy here is conceived and presented as a single, but highly complex and interconnected (internally and externally), entity. To better understand it, and the academic experience it provides and encapsulates, it is critically important to see it in this holistic way. While there are multiple stakeholders, roles and activities involved, they are all linked or enmeshed together, and beyond into the wider economy and society. Each element has its own part to play, and the whole cannot be properly understood if some are ignored.
